In 1948 Jimmy Jacobs opened "Jimmy's 2 Cents Plain and Fancy" in Brooklyn, New York. Jimmy taught himself how to sew a pair of pants which he made from the leftover fabric that the shop sold. The store was originally for men and boys then when Jimmy’s wife, Gloria, entered the business, the name was shortened and the merchandise in the store changed.
In the 1960s, the Jacobs traveled across the Atlantic and first to London's Carnaby Street for men's suits. Then, in 1965 Gloria discovered “the bikini” in the south of France and placed a basket of 50 bikinis in Jimmy’s. Within days, the bikinis sold out and the focus on women’s clothing followed.
In the late 1970s, the Jacobs’ daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Dominick Lepore joined Jimmy’s. During the 80s and 90s, the women’s merchandise took precedence, both in Brooklyn and the Westhampton Beach store, which opened in 1996. Jimmy, Gloria, Elizabeth, and Dominick started to travel to Milan and Paris, finding labels such as Armani, Alaia, Valentino, Versace, Prada, and Ferrè.
Today, the Jimmy's’ team travels the globe to select from designers in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Milan, and more. Whether you walk into one of the stores or enjoy the online shopping experience, you will feel the same level of Personal Service initiated by Jimmy Jacobs in the 1940s. Harper’s Bazaar wrote: “With a dedication that continues from one generation to the next, Jimmy’s continues to be a bastion of fashion, excitement and selection.”
